The Power & Energy Society (PES) provides the world's largest forum for sharing the latest in technological developments in the electric power industry, for developing standards that guide the development and construction of equipment and systems, and for educating members of the industry and the general public. Members of the Power & Energy Society are leaders in this field, and they - and their employers - derive substantial benefits from involvement with this unique and outstanding association.
PE Chapter of IEEE Calcutta Section was formed in 1993 by leading power
engineering professionals and academicians. From its inception the PE
chapter is actively engaged in organizing value added programs for power
engineers in general and its members in particular. The chapter brings
in eminent power engineers from different parts of the world taking
advantage of the IEEE PES Distinguished Lecturer program.
Apart from organizing regular technical lecture meetings, the chapter
focuses on organizing educational activities, student activities as well
as public affairs activities keeping in line with the broader
perspectives of IEEE PES. Special emphasis is given on membership
development activities, which has increased its membership strength
steadily over the years. In this context, the chapter acknowledges the
outstanding services of its volunteers by recommending them for
Outstanding Chapter Engineer Award from IEEE PES and also by giving
plaques on behalf of the chapter to its eminent members for rendering
notable services towards the growth and sustenance of the chapter. The
chapter takes initiative towards membership advancement by nominating
eligible members for elevation to senior member grade.
IEEE PES has identified two areas of significance, viz. GOLD (Graduate
Of Last Decade) and Women in Engineering. The PE Chapter has initiated
its GOLD activity earnestly and roped in quite a few GOLD members in its
fold which augurs well for its future growth. The chapter aims to have
vigorous activity to have more women power engineers as its members and
to make them active volunteers of the chapter for the years to come.
The chapter has received High Performance Chapter Grant from IEEE PES
every year starting from 2000. The Chapter has won major accolades from
IEEE PES through international competition, e.g. Outstanding Small
Chapter Award in 2003 and Best Small Chapter Performance Chapter Award
in the year 2009. The chapter website has also won the third prize in
PES Chapter website contest in the year 2006.
The aims of the chapter are to bring in more and more power engineers to
its fold and to organize programs that would add value to the
membership and further the careers of its members.
